Qualia: a property such as "slipperiness", considered independently from things having the property. Philosophers often use the term qualia to refer to the introspectively accessible, phenomenological, privately experienced aspects of our mental lives. For example, the actual feeling of perceiving the color white, which we can never be certain is the same for another person. Or the internal sensation of a shoulder injury. We can describe it to others and they can observe our behavior, and perhaps measure indications such as tissue inflammation, but the experience of the pain is only available to one person.
